Thinking of buying a Medela breast pump? Read this first !

We’re frequently asked by customers how Spectra breast pumps compare to Medela breast pumps. Now there are many breast pumps out there, and in Australia, Medela is one of the best known names in breast pumps. However, we’d like to think that Spectra breast pumps are now giving Aussie women a real alternative, offering great features, a far more affordable price and a great breast pump with quality pumping performance that’s essential to best support your breastfeeding journey.

Let’s compare a popular Medela breast pump to one from Spectra

Considering the Medela Swing? It’s a good pump, but lets look at what the Spectra 9 electric breast pump from Spectra offers:

Medela Swing RRP $320

Pros

  • Portable and lightweight
  • Dual phase program option to encourage letdown and speed milk flow
  • Adjust vacuum strength

Cons

  • No rechargeable battery – uses disposable batteries or mains power
  • Single pumping only
  • Open system – breastmilk can travel down tubing and into pump casing which can result in mould growth in places you cannot clean.

Spectra 9 RRP $249

Pros

  • Portable and lightweight
  • Dual phase program option to encourage letdown and speed milk flow
  • Adjust vacuum strength
  • Adjust cycle speed
  • Inbuilt rechargeable battery giving 2.5 – 3 hours of continuous use, depending on how you use it.
  • Single or double pumping – saves time & better supports supply
  • Closed system – a physical barrier prevents milk getting anywhere near the pump

Sorry, we can’t think of any cons 😉

Note – Medela do have other pumps, including double pumps, but they are more expensive again than the Swing. The Swing and the Spectra 9+ are the most cost comparable pumps, and we’re guessing that’s the point of comparison most important to you.

Don’t take our word for it, though! Feel free to drop by our Facebook Page and ask real mums what they think. Message us on Facebook any time, we’re here to help and we do understand how hard it is to know which pump will work best for you!

    Hi Spectra Team,

My wife and I wanted to thank you for your amazing customer service and turnaround in proving our new S2 Spectra Pump. I never write reviews about anything but this product is absolutely life changing for anyone having issues with breast feeding and looking for a breast pump.

In Australia the first places people will usually check are the large baby stores and those pumps are no way comparable to this product – from experience. When deciding to buy the only one I think comes close is the Medela sympathy which costs around 2k.

Your product is absolutely great quality and thanks so much again for sending it within a day.

    Cheers

    Sanjay
